WEAVING 101 WITH LUCY POSKITT

In this 3 hour workshop you'll learn the essentials of frame-loom weaving - how to set up your loom, the mechanics of weaving, different ways of creating texture and pattern and how to finish and remove your completed piece. Along with instruction there will be plenty of time during this class to begin (and maybe even finish!) your very first woven wall-hanging. Your class fee includes everything you need to begin and continue weaving (and yes! all of this is yours to keep): a beautiful, locally made maple hand loom, five essential tools, a selection of local, hand-dyed and natural-fibre yarns and an extensive booklet of step-by-step weaving techniques and resources.

Lucy Poskitt is a textile artist based out of Victoria, BC. She attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she studied textiles and printmaking. Lucy has lived all across Canada - from coast to coast and in-between! - and is constantly inspired by the landscapes of this country when designing her wall-hangings.

In addition to her own practice, Lucy has taught weaving to over 200 students. She comes to teaching with many years weaving experience and takes pride in introducing people to a craft over 30,000 years old (!) with a patient, exploratory and easy-going teaching style.

*NOTE: As the materials are custom designed based on the number of registrants, classes are nonrefundable.

This Intermediate class is for those of you that are ready to take your weaving further and get a bit more figurative or complex with your designs. You may have taken a previous Weaving 101 class with me (or someone else), OR already know the basics of weaving and have your own loom. (If you have your own loom not from a class with me please get in touch so we can make sure it will work for this workshop.)

In this 3-hour class we'll cover new ways of creating texture and pattern, how to create shapes like perfect circles, how to blend colours, how to design and plan out your weavings... and more. You'll come away with a new yarn pack, some new tools and a step-by-step booklet of all the techniques we covered in class.

Newer weavers of ALL levels take this workshop - please don't feel like you're not advanced enough to take this class! There is often lots of time for me to answer questions you have about techniques you learned in 101 or have seen elsewhere. :)

Prerequisite: You should be comfortable with setting up and taking your weaving off the loom, plain weave, and finishing your ends. Please come to class with a warped loom, a needle or two, comb, scissors and shed stick. (If you don't use a shed stick I'll have some on hand and we'll cover how to use it in class.)

Forage & BLOOM is all about embracing the WILD and the PRETTY. A true wildling, Amanda is drawn to all things green. She is a floral designer, forager and gardener. Gathering 'cuttings' and pieces of nature, her pockets are always brimming with a random array of goods. While her great love is for flowers, she also loves propagating and learning about the healing properties of plants. Kokedama making has been a way to bring the outdoors in. This technique of wrapping plants with moss and string highlights the asymmetry of nature, and compliments the balance Amanda seeks in all her designs. It has been a long process for her to find her way to following this passion. Spending years travelling, nursing and working in a clinical environment the idea of forage & BLOOM had been brewing in her mind for awhile and finally this has evolved into fruition.

Olive Branch & Co is a calligraphy and design studio, providing custom calligraphy services and products to celebrate the special and the everyday moments in life. It was born out of a desire to bring peace through the beauty of words, loving and honouring people in the process.

Melissa is a calligrapher and designer in Vancouver, B.C. She stumbled into calligraphy as a way to relieve stress, and along with that, started painting florals to pair with calligraphy and lettering. She currently has her own line of cards and prints featuring her calligraphy and illustrations, which are sold across Canada at various lovely boutiques. In addition to her own practice of creating and designing pieces for special events, small businesses, or corporate events, she has also taught calligraphy to over 100 students across Canada, and is ecstatic about adding teaching watercolour painting to her repertoire. As a former English teacher, she brings her extensive teaching background to her workshops, and is passionate about introducing people to art that promotes self-care and slow living.
